Day 19: Unknown No Longer – Virginia Historical Society

Researching early African-American ancestors that lived in slavery can present a unique challenge for family historians.  This project by the Virginia Historical Society has worked to help ease some of those many roadblocks with the Unknown No Longer project.

This project by the Virginia Historical Society has created a database of Virginia slave names and related documentation. For anyone researching early slave ancestors this site is a great free research resource. The Virginia Historical Society hosts the site but they have records that reach out beyond the borders of the state if you search by location. I encourage anyone researching slave ancestors to take a look at this database.
